January's OMHA Team of the Month
Congratulations to the U14A LaSalle Sabres for being selected as one of January's OMHA teams of the month!
The team of the month program is aimed at recognizing minor hockey teams
in the province making a positive impact on the ice and in their
communities who demonstrate all of the positives that hockey has to
offer. This award isn’t about going undefeated during the month or
scoring hat tricks, it’s about stories of teamwork and perseverance,
leadership and being good role models in and around the rink. We want to
hear the stories of food drives, helping a teammate, making new friends
and having fun!
This year our team has made an effort to give back to the community that has supported them for the last five years of their competitive hockey careers. Over the last several months the team has contributed to several needs in our community. We started off by collecting winter gloves/mittens (and hats) for a school that has children in need. The team collected nearly 100 items for the kids. Further more the team split up into several groups and canvassed their local neighborhoods in support of the local Lasalle Food Bank. In the end, the team was able to collect over 1300 items and $1000. The team visited the food bank to make the delivery and donation in December.
In addition to helping the food bank, the team, along side the Riverside Rangers U14A team, helped our local Sparky's Toy Drive. Parents and players from both teams helped collect nearly 75 toys for this Christmas Charity. The teams got together after their game and took a group picture with the rep from Lasalle Fire Department (who ran the drive) to show that they see there is more to hockey then just the on ice product. On top of that, the U14 players started attending the U9 MD (LHMA) team practices, in pairs, to help with developing the younger team. They were not there as coaches but did help out with drills, giving advice and helped mentoring the younger players. The goal was to help the younger team, who is in their first year of travel hockey, with feeling more comfortable and more recognizable around the rink.
