WELCOME MESSAGE FROM COACH STEVE
Hello to all the participants of the 05’ tryouts;

I would like to introduce myself to you.  I am Steve Symons the head coach for the upcoming season 2017/18.

I will represent 1/22nd of the “Hockey Family” that will be helping you in your journey to become the best women or men that you can be.  The environment in which you will be entering will be fostering strong disciplined minds that will focus on the tasks at hand.  Here are the aspects of the game I will be focusing on while evaluating you for a position on the team:

1. Skating -  speed, agility and transitions

2. Hockey sense – how youre able to control the game on the ice and off the ice

3. Goal scoring abilities – not saying you have to be the one scoring

4. Consistency – reliable play day in and day out

5. Playmaking ability – how to control the play

6. Skill with the puck – self explanatory

7. Character – leadership qualities (review next paragraph)

8. Size – next year is checking, size will play a factor but ability on the ice outweighs pure size

9. Play without the puck – how you manipulate the other team by your actions

10. Two way play – offence is great but you only need 1 goal to win a game.

This was taken from an article of what attributes OHL scouts are looking for in a draft choice.

The Best Leaders are:

1. The best servants

2. Listen more and talk less

3. Bring people up instead of putting them down

4. Always have an ear to the ground

5. Lead by example

6. Selfless

7. Do the right thing when no one is watching

This was taken from builtforhockey.com – 7 crucial traits of all the best leaders in hockey

I encourage you all to also look up “The 10 Ingredients of the Perfect Hockey Player” from the North Shore Winter club……

My philosophy in hockey is there are no mistakes in hockey, but there are learning experiences to grow from.  As a Team and a Hockey Family each forward step and possible back steps will be dealt with as one united force which will bring fun and excitement back to the game regardless of the score board.

Thank you
,

Coach Steve
